Penn Draws at Seton Hall, 1-1
ORANGE, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania has been playing men’s soccer since 1910 and it took 111 years for the Quakers to open a season with back-to-back draws.
After a 2-2 draw with American to open the 2016 campaign, the Red and Blue played Seton Hall to a 1-1 draw in the second match of the season – unable to take advantage of a nearly game-long player advantage following an early red card to the Pirates.
Penn gained an early man-advantage when Seton Hall’s Patrick Burd was issued a red card in the 7th minute following a scrim at the Penn end line where Burd stepped on a Penn defender. However, it was the Pirates who would strike first via a Jonathan Jimenez goal in the 24th minute.
The Pirates had been under siege by Penn following the red card, but caught the Quakers in transition. A long pass from their own 18-yard line sent The Hall down field, and Jimenez made a nice cut to find open space and loop a ball to the top left corner off a Andres Arcila pass.
Aramis Kouzine opened his collegiate account with his first career goal in the 59th minute to pull Penn level. Kouzine one-touched a bouncing ball, sneaking it in off the left post. The assist on the goal came from fellow freshman Sam Hefter who collected a long cross and sent the first offering into the box.
In overtime, the best chance for either side came via Marc Kaizi-Lutu in the 106th minute, but his point-blank chance was turned away.
Overall, Penn held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks, but was only able to manage a 14-12 edge in shots. Dami Omitaomu and Sam Wancowicz led Penn with two shots on goal apiece.
Etan Mabourakh made four saves in the game.
Penn is back in action on September 9 when the Red and Blue make their first-ever trip to Creighton to take on the No. 8 Blue Jays.
