Pirates Shutout Golden Eagles On The Pitch, 3-0
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior Amanda Malkiewicz scored two goals and classmate Kimmy Cummings added another pacing East Carolina to a 3-0 win over Conference USA foe Southern Miss Friday night at the ECU Soccer Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 6-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 3-8-3 and 0-4-1.
In a game dominated by the Pirates from the outset, Malkiewicz wasted little time in getting ECU on the board scoring her second goal of the season (19th career) during the second minute of the match for an early 1-0 advantage. Junior Hali Oughton started the run sending a pass to Cummings just inside the box, who then fed Malkiewicz with a center pass from two yards out beating the keeper with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
In the second half, the Pirates continued their offensive pressure scoring on a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. Senior Jessica Abshire lobbed a pass over a pair of Southern Miss defenders finding Cummings wide open in the box for the Pirates second goal of the night.
The Pirates capped the scoring in the 84th minute when Malkiewicz netted her second goal of the match sending a shot into the lower right corner off a pass from junior Caty Butler. For Malkiewicz it was her 20th career goal (fifth all-time at ECU), first career multi-goal game and a single-game career-best four points.
Cummings would finish the night with three points (assist, goal) pushing her season goal total to six, while Butler collected her team-best 17th point of the year.
Sophomore Christiane Cordero was stellar in the net stopping five Golden Eagle shots and posting her third shutout of the season (fifth career) in 90 minutes of work. Southern Miss keeper Hannah Vanderboegh surrendered all three strikes and registered three saves in the contest.
Offensively, Southern Miss had five different players with one shot on goal and Danielle Beatty led the club with two overall shots. Junior Chrissy Gratz led the Pirates with three shots, while Cummings, Malkiewicz and junior Rachel Wechsler added two. ECU held a commanding 15-7 shot advantage, 6 to 5 shots on goal, while edging Southern Miss in corners 5 to 4.
The Pirates will be back on the pitch Sunday, Oct. 9 when they play host to No. 24 UCF with a 2 p.m. (ET) scheduled start.
