PLESCIA, COSTELLO COMBINE TWICE IN 2-0 MONMOUTH WIN OVER WAGNER
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team improved to 3-0 in Northeast Conference action as sophomores Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan) combined for a pair of markers in the Hawks 2-0 victory over Wagner on Tuesday night on The Great Lawn. With the victory, Monmouth's sixth in its last seven matches, the Hawks improve to 6-4 overall on the year.
Plescia, who is now tied for the team-lead with five goals, registered her second career two-goal game, netting scores off assists from classmate Costello in each half of the league triumph.
"Tonight was a solid performance from us in all areas," stated head coach Krissy Turner, whose side has opened NEC play 3-0 in four of the last five campaigns. "We created a lot of chances, and were able to minimize Wagner's opportunities."
Monmouth outshot Wagner 24-3 in the match, including a 17-1 advantage in the second half, while creating 11 corner kick opportunities.
The Hawks got on the board in the first half when Nicole Close (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) won a header to Costello, who fed Plescia at the 25 minute mark.
Leading 1-0 at the half, the Hawks doubled the score in the 70th minute, when Stacy Kadell (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) played a ball to the endline that Costello saved and fed Plescia for her fifth marker on the year.
Kate Marcy made eight saves for the Seahawks, and was helped by the post and crossbar on two other occasions in the loss, while freshman Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a pair of stops for Monmouth in her second career shutout.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday night, October 7, when the Hawks host Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference play at 7:00 p.m., as the program hosts "Christie Rampone Night".
