Plimpton Nets OT Game-Winner Against BU
VESTAL, NY – For the second straight season, Josh Plimpton came off the bench for the Iona men's soccer team and delivered a game-winning overtime goal to give the Gaels their first win of the season. Last season Plimpton entered in the second half and drilled home the game-winner against No. 24 UConn for his first collegiate score.
Plimpton entered Tuesday night's game in the 75', replacing sophomore midfielder Najim Romero. The Connecticut native stayed quiet and did his duties until midway through the first overtime period. At that moment, Plimpton took in a cross near the goal from junior Malcolm Moreno and buried it from close range to send the Maroon & Gold into celebration.
Iona out shot Binghamton 15-8, and 9-3 in the second half and overtime. Sophomore Lenworth Lopez had three shots on goal. Senior Killian Colombie and rookie Mauro Bravo each had one while graduate Claude Diesse came off the bench to supply a pair. Nine of the Maroon & Gold's shots were on net, forcing Binghamton's goalkeeper Chris Shutler to be busy making eight saves.
Like in game one against LIU Brooklyn, plenty of cards were dished out to the two teams. Iona was handed three yellow cards and the Bearcats were shown five.
Junior Juan Alcantara made three saves in net for Iona, including one in the 94', just 39 seconds before the eventual game-winner. Noah Luescher had five of Binghamton's shots and each of his teams' on-goal strikes.
Both the Gaels and Bearcats each had five corner kick chances.
The Maroon & Gold return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 1 against La Salle at Mazzella Field. The program begins its home-opening contest against the Explorers at 3 PM. The game is being broadcasted on ESPN .
