Preziosi Scores In 1-1 Draw At Canisius
BUFFALO, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team earned its first point of the conference season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against the Canisius College Golden Griffins. Freshman Faith Preziosi continued her strong rookie season with her team-leading third goal.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona began the game applied the initial pressure with five shots in the opening 15 minutes. Junior Ciara Guglielmo had an early attempt that had to be saved by Golden Griffin keeper Alana Rossi. The Gael midfielder tested Rossi against in the 24' but was denied.
Canisius broke through first in the 30' with Madeline Beaulieu scoring her fifth goal of the season. Shauna Lee played the ball to Beaulieu who buried it past Iona's freshman goalie Emma Havrilla. The Maroon & Gold keeper had to remain sharp as she would need to make a save on Beaulieu just two minutes later.
The Gaels had the final shot on target in the first half with redshirt freshman Mackenzie Meixner attempting.
The teams combined for 16 total shots and seven shots on goal in the first half. Havrilla made two first half saves and Rossi initially kept the Maroon & Gold off the board with four saves.
Iona broke through and tied the game in the 54' with Preziosi scoring her third of the season. Junior forward partner Amber Crispin played a ball in the box and the one-time MAAC rookie of the Week chipped it over Rossi to deadlock the contest.
Havrilla had to come up large for the Gaels over the final 30 minutes of regulations. She made three saves, including one in the 90' on Margetta Dry's final shot to end it regulation.
Freshman Andrea Ferrer had the only shot of the first overtime period. Hannah Morpurgo had a header fly high for Canisius in the second extra period. Crispin had the final shot of the game in the 110' that was corralled by Rossi.
STATISTICAL NOTES
- Gaels 18 shots is a season-high and the most since it had 20 against Saint Peter's last season in its 1-0 victory at Mazzella Field.
- Saturday marked the first time Iona had a shot advantage on its opponent and double-digit shots itself for two straight games. Iona's five corner kicks tied a season-high. It previously had five at Wagner (Sept. 2) as part of its 2-0 win.
- Preziosi and Crispin are having nearly mirror-seasons of each other thus far. Each has three goals, one assist, seven points and nine shots on goal.
- Preziosi has two more total shots and Crispin has a slightly higher shot on goal percentage at .214.
- Preziosi attempted a career-best four shots and played a season-high 93 minutes on Saturday.
