Pride Falls To ODU In CAA Contest
Hofstra scored the game's first goal but Old Dominion posted two second-half scores as the Pride lost, 2-1, to the Monarchs in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Friday night at ODU Soccer Stadium.
Freshman Leah Galton scored 11:12 into the game, but Hofstra lost for just the second time in the last nine games in falling to 10-6 and 6-2 in the CAA. ODU's Ashlee Coutu and Jessie Klamut scored to improve the Monarchs to 4-12 and 2-6 in league play.
Galton (Harrogate, England) scored her team-leading ninth goal in the 12th minute when she beat ODU goalkeeper Laura Bush to the far post. Sophomore Sam Scolarici (Aldie, Va.) passed it to Galton at the top of the box for her first assist of the season.
Scolarici now has registered at least a point in three consecutive games. Galton, who also scored in Hofstra's victory on Towson in the previous game, has netted a goal in back-to-back games.
But ODU came out of the halftime break strongly, scoring 17 seconds in when Coutu kicked in a rebound into the open net. Hofstra junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England) made the initial save on Taylor Mertz's shot before Coutu tallied her sixth goal of the season in the 46th minute.
Klamut broke the tie in the 77th minute when her shot from the left-hand side went off the right post and into the net, giving the Monarchs the edge. Klamut's goal was her second of the campaign.
ODU did not allow a shot after the goal, though Morphitis gave Hofstra a chance to comeback when she saved Coutu's on-target attempt in the 81st minute.
Morphitis finished with seven saves. ODU, which started Bush in net, switched to Brianna Alvarado at halftime. Bush made seven saves in the opening half. The Monarchs defense tightened in the second half, allowing just one shot-on-goal that Alvarado stopped to pick up the win.
Hofstra will continue its Virginia road swing with a 2 p.m. game at William and Mary on Sunday.
