Princeton Edges Columbia, 2-1

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Will Stamatis scored in the 16th minute for Columbia, but Princeton responded with two second half goals to edge the Lions, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers came out aggressive in the opening 15 minutes of the action, tallying the first five shots, but the Lions would get the first goal on their first shot attempt of the contest. In the 16th minute, senior Will Stamatis took control of a loose ball inside the penalty box and rifled a shot that deflected off the Princeton goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 Columbia lead. The strike was Stamatis’ fourth of the year.

Princeton would record an additional five shots the remainder of the half, including a header from Josh Miller that Kyle Jackson saved for Columbia to bring the game to the halftime break with the Lions still ahead 1-0. Stamatis accounted for all three Columbia shots in the opening stanza.

The continued offensive pressure from the Tigers paid off in the second 45 minutes with a pair of goals. In the 58th minute, Thomas Sanner provided the game’s equalizer with his seventh score of the season. Princeton clinched the win in the 87th minute when Brendan McSherry tipped in a pass from Cameron Porter just inside the right post.

The Tigers ended the game with a 19-6 shots advantage, while also launching 10 corner kicks to the Lions’ one.

Columbia returns home to take on Binghamton Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
