Providence Men’s Soccer Tops Holy Cross, 2-0, Earns Fifth Consecutive Win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior forward Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) matched a career high with two goals to lead the 23rd-ranked Providence College men’s soccer team past Holy Cross, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match played at Glay Field. It marked the fifth consecutive win for the Friars who improved to 5-1-0, while the Crusaders are now 0-4-2.
Jecewiz broke the scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute as he recorded his first goal of the season. Red-shirt freshman Matt Pesci (Towaco, N.J.) played a cross from the right flank to Jecewiz, who headed the ball into the lower right corner from six yards out. It marked Pesci’s first collegiate point. Jecewiz struck again, this time in the 88th minute. With the Crusaders pushing forward in search of the equalizer, junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) played a long ball to Jecewiz who was at midfield. Jecewiz let the ball get by him and a defender and raced on a breakaway, before calmly tucking a low shot into the right corner and seal the win for the Friars. It marked the first point for Cintron who was making his first appearance this season.
Holy Cross finished with a 4-3 edge in shots in the first half. The Crusaders had a chance to take the lead in the 28th minute when Steven Stefanak was alone in front but his header from five yards out was turned aside by PC senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.). Obando finished with two saves and earn his fourth consecutive shutout. He has not conceded a goal in 429:01. Michael Thompson had two saves for Holy Cross. Overall, the Friars had the edge in shots, 9-6, and corner kicks, 9-1.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, September 17 at 7:00 whey they play at third-ranked Creighton in Omaha, Neb.
