Quakers blank Defiance
September 17, 2011
Wilmington College emphatically ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Defiance College at Charlie Gilhart Field Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers are now 2-3-2 on the season while Defiance drops to 1-5-0.
Wilmington got on the board in the 25th minute when Ashley Garcia (Riverside/Stebbins) delivered a through-ball to Sarah Watters (Cincinnati/Turpin), who slotted a shot past the Defiance keeper for her second goal of the season.
The game went to the break with WC maintaining a 1-0 lead, but things changed quickly as the second half rolled into motion.
Lauren Mumaw (Dayton/Dayton Christian) took a pass from Watters and ripped a shot that put Wilmington up, 2-0, in the 56th minute.
The Quakers continued to dominate play and went up, 3-0, when Jenni Marck (Cincinnati/Wyoming) headed home a shot off a Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) free kick in the 79th minute.
The game’s final score came via an own goal off a Wilmington corner kick in the 88th minute.
Freshman Hannah Riffel (Circleville/Logan) went the distance in goal to pick up her first collegiate win and shutout. Riffel stopped three shots.
The Quakers owned every statistical edge, out-shooting Defiance, 26-10, and taking 10 corners to the Yellow Jackets’ three.
The Quakers will travel to Gambier to face Kenyon at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
