Quakers bumped from OAC penthouse

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — An early John Carroll goal set the tone as the Blue Streaks topped Wilmington, 2-0, in Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday night.
The Quakers are now 2-1-0 in the OAC, 4-6-3 overall. John Carroll moves to 2-1-0 in the conference, 8-5-0 for the season.
“I’m disappointed because I don’t think we played our best game today,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “I think we’re capable of playing better than we did.”
The Blue Streaks jumped on Wilmington quickly and took a 1-0 lead when Colleen Harmon scored in the fourth minute.
John Carroll continued to carry the attack, out-shooting Wilmington, 12-4, in the opening half. No other goals were scored, though, as the game went to the break with Wilmington trailing by a goal.
Wilmington’s best chances to score the equalizer came in the opening minute of the second half, but John Carroll keeper Haley McDonald turned away a pair of shots.
Wilmington managed just two more shots the rest of the way, and John Carroll bumped its lead to 2-0 when Harmon scored her second goal of the game in the 73rd minute.
For the game, John Carroll out-shot Wilmington, 24-8. The Blue Streaks owned a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Wilmington will host Capital in OAC action 7 p.m. Wednesday.
