CEDARVILLE — Wilmington College and Cedarville battled to a scoreless draw on the Yellow Jackets’ pitch Tuesday night.
The game offered 110 minutes of competition that was typical of how the series between the Quakers and Yellow Jackets has gone.
“Cedarville is always a tough match,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “The last three years have been that way. We beat them in overtime last year and we scored in the closing minutes to beat them two years ago. We knew that it was going to be a tough match, and it certainly was.”
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. Wilmington took three shots to Cedarville’s two.
The Quakers’ offense got untracked in the second, but getting untracked did not result in a new number on the scoreboard. Wilmington out-shot Cedarville, 9-1, but the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
Cedarville picked up the attack in overtime. The Yellow Jackets took the only two shots in the first extra period and out-shot the Quakers, 3-2, in the second overtime. The Jackets’ final two shots were cleared off the Wilmington goal line by Sammi Miller (West Chester/Lakota East).
“Sammi was guarding the post and saved the game. It was a great play,” Spirk said.
Hannah Riffel (Circleville/Logan Elm) and Abbey Williamson (Grove City/Bishop Ready) split time in goal to earn the shutout.
“Abbey played very well in the second half. She came up with a couple big saves that kept us in the game. Caroline Guindon came off the bench and did a great job at marking back. We’re still trying to figure out our scoring mentality, but we are getting better every day,” Spirk said.
Spirk said the non-conference battle in the middle of the week will hopefully provide momentum, as his team gets ready for an OAC showdown at John Carroll Saturday afternoon.
“We played Waynesburg last week in a tough match that we didn’t get a result on, and that helped us to get fired up to play well this past Saturday at Muskingum,” Spirk said. “I hate having a week off. Having a tough match like this definitely helps us. Now, we have three days to get ready for John Carroll.”
