Quinnipiac Men’s Soccer Falls In Double Overtime To Mount St. Mary’s, 2-1
EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team fell to Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary’s in double-overtime, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. The Bobcats’ record now stands at 3-3 in NEC action and 5-7 overall, while Mount St. Mary’s improves to 4-3 in NEC play and 7-6-1 overall.
Quinnipiac came out with noticeable energy in the first half and scored its fastest goal of the season when junior Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) netted his team-high fifth goal of the year in the second minute of play. On the score, senior Durval Pereira (Cheshire, Conn.) distributed his third assist of the season.
Mount St. Mary’s responded to tie the score at one apiece when senior Ian Hendrie scored on an unassisted tally in the 8th minute of play.
Each side clamped down defensively for the remainder of the first half, as well as the entire second half, keeping the game tied at one apiece after 90 minutes of play.
The Bobcats seemed to have the upper hand in the first overtime, as it outshot the Mount, 2-to-1 during the first 10 minutes of extra time. Quinnipiac registered the first shot in the second overtime frame, but a header from sophomore Jimmy Ockford following a long cross from sophomore Patrick Wheeler snuck by Quinnipiac freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) for the game-winning goal. Chris Wheeler was also credited with an assist on the score.
In the contest, Angoitia made five saves in net for Quinnipiac, compared to his counterpart Peter Steve’s three saves in goal for the Mount. Overall, Mount St. Mary’s outshot Quinnipiac 19-to-9 in the contest.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to face Central Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.
