Raiders Drop Double OT Match to Wittenberg
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Wittenberg Sunday afternoon at the Capital/Fort Rapids Invitational.
Trailing 1-0 through 45 minutes of play, freshman forward Clay Hicks(Leetonia/Cardinal Mooney) squared up a pass on the right side from Chris Felker(Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) and netted his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute.
Over the next 40 minutes of play, Mount Union took five shots but could not take the lead.
The score remained 1-1 through the second half and the Purple Raiders and Tigers went to overtime. Mount Union senior goalie Jon Critell(Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) made three saves in regulation.
Mount Union (1-1) outshot Wittenberg (2-0) 13-3 in regulation.
Neither squad took a shot in the first overtime period.
But just 37 seconds into the second overtime, Wittenberg came through when Daniel Brody received a pass from Kevin Bond and netted the game-winning goal.
The Purple Raiders are back on the pitch Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 pm when they play at defending national champion Ohio Wesleyan.
