Rangers Bounce Back with Win Over CCU
Denver, Colorado: The No. 8 Regis University Ranger men’s soccer team bounced back from Friday night’s loss with an impressive 4-0 shutout over the Colorado Christian Cougars (4-8, 1-7 RMAC). “Overall that is the best we have played all year,” said head coach Tony McCall. This was the second meeting of these two squads this season; the first, a few weeks back, Regis scored a late-game goal in double-overtime to come away victorious.
“We had a number of different guys contribute,” mentioned McCall. Each of the goals was scored by a different Ranger in tonight’s contest. Junior midfielder Ryan Urwiller (Broomfield, Colorado) opened the scoring up in the 21st minute of play receiving a pass from freshman forward Sawyer Lincoln (Colorado Springs, Colorado) beating his defender and firing a low shot on the ground into the back of the net. The entire play began from a corner kick taken by senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland).
Shortly after in the 24th minute of play, Lincoln added a goal to his stat chart slotting a ball past Cougar goalkeeper Brandon Eide. The assist came from a flick on by Urwiller. The Rangers went into halftime with a two-goal cushion and dominating in all aspects of the game.
Junior defender Jordan Spring (Parker, Colorado) blasted a shot from 40-yards out that curved mid-air into the goal to make the score 3-0 in the 62nd minute of the game. Senior midfielder Arnthor Kristinsson (Akranes, Iceland) capped off the scoring in the 85th minute striking a left-footed shot on the ground far post just inside the box from freshman defender Taylor Wiebke (Overland Park, Kansas).
“Thought today we combined, the guys were focused, we had a good game plan and they executed,” stated McCall in reflection of his team’s performance. The Rangers outshot the Cougars 30-7 with 13 shots on frame and saw ten corner kick opportunities.
Goalkeepers Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) shared the minutes between the posts. Nicolosi started the game and is credited with the win making just one save. Adkisson finished the game strong making two saves to keep a Ranger clean sheet.
Regis is back on their home pitch on Friday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. against Adams State (1-10, 0-8 RMAC). RU defeated Adams State 3-0 earlier this year.
