Rangers Find a Way, Maybin with Game-Winner
Denver, Colorado: Bouncing back from a rough two-game stint on the road last weekend the Regis University Ranger men’s soccer team secured a close 1-0 win over the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (10-6, 7-6 RMAC) Wednesday afternoon. Both teams lacked some energy and enthusiasm throughout much of the game but the Rangers found life scoring the lone-goal of the match to move them to an overall record of 12-4 and 9-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. “We put ourselves back into the picture today so we are happy with the result,” mentioned head coach Tony McCall.
The game began with both sides taking turns at possessing the ball. Play in the first half remained even with the Roadrunners slightly edging out in shots with six to the Rangers five. The score held at 0-0 at halftime with both teams in search of a goal.
Senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland) found the life the Rangers were searching for in the 76th minute. Maybin received a through ball from junior midfielder Jacob Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colorado) beat his defender to slot a low ball on the ground to the far post past the MSU Denver goalkeeper and into the back of the net. This was goal number 14 for Maybin this season.
With less than ten minutes remaining, the Roadrunners would challenge the Regis defense a couple more times but they would continue to hold strong until the final whistle. MSU Denver won the shot advantage with 11 to RU’s nine and saw one more corner kick opportunity with seven to the Rangers six.
Ranger goalkeepers Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) and Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) shared time in goal. Adkisson started the game and made one save. Nicolosi subbed in at halftime and earned the win keeping a clean sheet.
Regis is back on their home pitch Sunday, November 2 at 2:30 p.m. as they host the conference-leading Colorado Mesa Mavericks (13-2-1, 11-1 RMAC).
