Raymonds' Goal Boosts Warhawks to Home Win
A goal in the 70th minute by Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) proved to be enough as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) Saturday evening at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
The Warhawks, 8-5-1, have now won seven of their last nine matches. The Thunder fall to 9-5-1.
Each team registered three shots on goal in the first half, but only one was truly a threat.
Two and a half minutes before halftime, Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) corralled the ball on the left side of the goal and fired a low scorcher towards the net. Wheaton keeper, Hasten Biddlecome, was able to move to his right to make the save and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) nearly put the Warhawks on the scoreboard early in the second half, but his shot from 20 yards out just missed to the right of the goal.
Raymonds would not let his next opportunity pass by. After collecting a pass from Jake Santellano(Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) in the 70th minute, Raymonds pushed the ball past his defender on the left side and beat the keeper to the right for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) nearly gave the Warhawks a two goal advantage in the 74th minute, but his shot hit the post and Biddlecome was able to collect the ball, preventing further damage.
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Warhawks, making four saves to earn his second solo shutout and move to 6-1.
The Warhawks have a quick turnaround as they return to the field tomorrow to host Washington University-St. Louis at noon.
