Lady Cardinals fall to TCU in soccer opener
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 2-0 loss at TCU in a non-conference game played in 102-degree heat on Sunday.
“We had our chances, especially in the first half, but we just couldn’t capitalize,” Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. “It was 0-0 at halftime, and I felt very good about the way we played. Unfortunately, we couldn’t put the ball in the net.”
Natalie Werner gave TCU (1-1-0) the lead 7 minutes, 36 seconds into the second half on an assist from Monica Alvarado. Brooke Kviz scored an insurance goal with 8:23 remaining off an assist from Kristen Barg.
“We were pushing up trying to get the tying goal, and they scored on a counter attack,” Hardman said.
Jennifer Gibbs made five saves for Lamar. Alicen Wright turned aside six shots for TCU.
Despite the loss, Hardman was heartened by what he saw.
“I thought our freshmen did an outstanding job in their first game,” he said. Kristin Bos had five shots and four shots on goal. I thought she was tremendous. Kimmy Albeno was solid at midfield and Alejandra Amador gave us some quality minutes off the bench.”
Lamar returns to action when it hosts Grambling State in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar Soccer Complex.
“We’re looking forward to playing in front of our home fans,” Hardman said. “They’ve always given us great support.”
