Redhawk Men’s Soccer Edged 2-1 by No. 13 UCLA
In a gritty tough 90-minute battle, the Seattle University men's soccer team was edged 2-1 by the No. 13/18 UCLA Bruins Friday evening in Los Angeles, Calif. The Redhawks kept pace with their nationally ranked host, but a late second half UCLA goal would prove to be the difference maker in the match.
The Bruins would take an early 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute off a Chandler Hoffman through ball to the far post, which UCLA managed to preserve until midway through the second half.
At 64:07, the Bruins' Eder Arreola stopped an on target SU shot with his hand in the box, setting up a Redhawk penalty kick. Senior tri-captain Demaci Roussos (Sacramento, Calif.) successfully took SU's first penalty kick of the year and evened the score at one-all.
Down a player, UCLA built up momentum and sent in five consecutive shots, including the eventual game-winner at 78:40 off a Kelyn Rowe shot.
The Redhawks responded with a pair of shots of their own, including a Tyler Hanson (Federal Way, Wash.) shot that was on target and out of range for the Bruin goalkeeper, but went just high and bounced off the crossbar in the 86th minute.
"We really put ourselves in a position to win. The guys did a great job in a lot of ways, but we fell short and it's disappointing to go a man up and let a goal in," head coach Brad Agoos said. "But they are a top-ranked team, and again we come off the field disappointed against a top-ranked team. Coming off the field feeling like we should have won - it is another good statement for our program."
Defensively, goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) had four saves in the match.
Seattle U (1-3-2) will look to get back on track on Sunday, Sept. 25, at CSU Northridge. First kick is slated for 11 a.m.
