Seattle University scored 2:23 into the first overtime to hand the University of Montana soccer team a 2-1 loss Friday afternoon at Seattle in the Grizzlies’ final regular-season match. Montana (6-11-2) opened the scoring in the 60th minute on redshirt freshman Maddie Simmel’s first collegiate goal. The Redhawks (11-6-0) answered two minutes later to tie the match 1-1 and send it to overtime, where Taylor Bolibol’s first goal of the season won it. The match was played in heavy rain and wet conditions, and the teams finished with nearly identical statistics. Both teams had 12 shots and six corner kicks. “The weather made it tough for both teams. I thought both teams handled the conditions well,” UM coach Mark Plakorus said. “I’m happy with how we played but disappointed for the girls that we did not get the result. I think a tie would have been more indicative of how evenly the match was played.” After a scoreless first half, Simmel opened the scoring at 59:37 on an unassisted goal. A ball was played in, and Simmel, an SU defender and Seattle goalkeeper Madison Goverde all converged. Simmel pressured the ball and scored on her third attempt at a shot. “Maddie really battled hard for her goal,” Plakorus said. “She pressured the ball, and she wouldn’t stop until it was in the goal.” Megan Daniels tied the match less than two minutes later when she headed in a short crossing pass inside the near post at 61:33. Bolibol ended the match early in overtime. A minute after sophomore Mary Makris took the first shot of the extra session for Montana, Emma Levy crossed the ball into the box for the Redhawks, and Bolibol beat UM junior keeper Kristen Hoon from five yards out. Junior Erin Craig took a match-high five shots in 69 minutes of work, putting one on goal. Stephanie Verdoia took four shots to lead Seattle. Goverde (11-6-0) made three saves to earn the victory. Hoon (5-9-1) finished with four saves. The match was the final one for Montana prior to next week’s Big Sky Conference tournament at Greeley, Colo. The Grizzlies will take the No. 4 seed into the four-team tournament and face host Northern Colorado next Friday at 5 p.m.
