Rider Falls at NJIt
NEWARK, NJ – NJIT scored twice in the first half and added three second-half goals to defeat the Rider University women’s soccer team, 5-0, Thursday night. With the loss, the Broncs’ first of the season, Rider slips to 2-1-1. The Highlanders improved to 2-2-1.
NJIT took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, with Fiona Wright finishing low inside the left post off a free kick. Bailey Chant pushed the Highlanders’ lead to 2-0 with a strong individual effort from 30 yards out to finish into the left upper 90 in the 43rd minute. Rider enjoyed a 10-4 edge in shots in the first half, including a 3-2 advantage in shots on target. However, both of the Highlanders’ shots on goal went in, while NJIT goalkeeper Molly Saylor made saves on each of the Broncs’ chances.
The Highlanders kept the pressure on early in the second half, with Wright scoring her NJIT record-setting 13th career goal in the 50th minute. NJIT got on the board once again in the 71st minute, as Fiorella Doglio headed in Madison Taibl’s beautiful cross into the box from close range to make it 4-0, while Chant fed Lauren Chamberlain for another goal in the 84th minute.

- Though Rider still holds a 6-5 edge in the all-time series, NJIT has won the last three meetings.
- Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School) made four saves in defeat.
Broncs By The Numbers
- Carbonell, Niamh Cashin (Nottingham, England/All Saints Academy) and Teresa Richardson played all 90 minutes for the fourth-straight game to begin the season.
- Nikki Arrington (Middleton, MA/Masconomet Regional), Ailis Martin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), Hailey Russell (Riverside, NJ/Riverside), Lindsey Maslow (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and Makenzie Rodrigues (Seattle, WA/Forest Ridge) also played all 90 minutes.
- Rodrigues led the Rider offense with eight shots, while Russell took five. Both Rider freshmen put two shots on target.
- The Broncs outshot NJIT, 23-15. However, the Highlanders put nine of their shots on target to the Broncs’ seven shots on goal.
- Rider took five corner kicks to NJIT’s four.
