Roadrunners Outlast Vandals, 1-0
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Riding a shutout victory against Utah Valley on Friday the University of Idaho soccer team couldn’t find the back of the net on Sunday against CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners produced one goal and outlasted the Vandals, 1-0 at Main Soccer Field.
Bakersfield (2-9-1, 1-3-1 WAC) compiled 14 shots, landing 10 on target on Sunday. Keeper Marina Siegl made nine saves on the day, allowing the lone goal in the 44th minute.
“Marina has been fantastic for us,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “She did everything she could to keep us in the game.”
Emily Noethe tallied her second goal of the season with a header off the crossing pass from Erich Shelton’s corner kick. The Roadrunners had six corner opportunities in all.
“If the other team is hungrier and we are second best everywhere we got the results we deserved,” Showler said. “We are still looking for that elusive 90 minute complete performance.”
CSUB keeper Tori Ornela kept a clean sheet on the day not registering a save on hr way to her first shutout win of the season. Idaho (3-9-0, 3-2-0 WAC) only mustered two shots on goal in the match, matching a season low (at Weber State, 8/23).
The first 26 minutes of the game set the tempo for the rest of the game. CSUB fired off five shots, four of which were on goal and the fifth being blocked. The first half saw the ‘Runner outshoot the Vandals 9-1.
Idaho opened the second half with an offensive push. Katie Baran attempted two corner kicks in the 51st minute and defender Nitalia Zuniga put a shot high over the net.
The Vandals will look to rebound at Grand Canyon next Sunday, Oct. 13. Idaho won the first matchup between the two schools, 3-1.
NOTES: Freshman defender Madison Moore made her first career start…sophomore Reagan Quigley saw her first playing time of the season…senior defender Chelsie Breen is now sixth in school history with 72 games started…keeper Marina Siegl played a complete 90 minutes on Sunday, becoming for the first Vandal keeper to play a complete game this season…nine points in conference play (through five games) is the best conference start since 2010 (12 pts.).
