Robert Morris Sneaks Past Niagara, 2-1
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Niagara women's soccer team could not hold onto a one-goal lead as the Purple Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to the Robert Morris Colonials on Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.
The Purple Eagles (0-2-0) lone goal came from Haillie Price who already has a pair of tallies in the first two games of the season. Hayley Besaw registered an assist, while goalkeeper Claire Feiertag made three saves during the game.
"We competed very hard today," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We lead for most of game, but came up short in the end. We need to learn how to play with the lead and finish games."
For the second straight game Price got the Purple Eagles on the scoreboard first, this time off an assist from Besaw in the 12th minute of play. Besaw's initial shot from inside the box pinged off the crossbar by goalkeeper Becky Schoenecker before Price got a foot on the rebound.
Price's goal was the only one of the opening half, as RMU outshot NU by a 9-6 margin, but the Colonials (2-0-0) netted the next pair of goals in the second 45 minutes of play to register the victory over the Purps.
Robert Morris notched the equalizer 13 minutes into the second half when forward Leah Prentice capitalized on a penalty kick after the Purple Eagles were called for a handball in the box. Sophomore forward Madison Kozlowski tallied the game-winning header in the 87th minute off a long ball from Prentice.
Robert Morris outshot Niagara for the game, 15-12.
Niagara will look for its first win of the season in Tampa, Fla. as the Purple Eagles take part in the USF Tournament next weekend hosted by the University of South Florida. The opening game with be against Jacksonville University on Friday, August 30 with a 4 p.m. kickoff time.
