'Roos Settle for a 1-1 Tie with 'Dons
(Kansas City, Mo.) - In its final home game of the season, the UMKC women's soccer team (5-7-4, 2-2-1 SL) settled for a 1-1 tie with the Fort Wayne Mastodons (7-6-1, 3-1-1 SL) on Sunday afternoon.
In the first period with the ball deep in Fort Wayne's territory, the Kangaroos took a 1-0 lead during the seventh minute when midfielder Zaina Mayer found midfielder Sophie Rackham (1) in front of the net as her shot was saved by keeper Sam Pavilka (7-6-1), yet midfielder Ashley Gann (2) was there for the rebound and score.
At the half, Kansas City maintained its lead along with owning the shot-count, 6-3.
Coming out of the locker room, the Mastodons tied the match at one during the 55th minute when midfielder Tylar Allison (4) placed a free kick in Kansas City's box as midfielder Erin Gill (3) scored via a header shot.
As the second period progressed, the Kangaroos continued to out-shoot Fort Wayne, 12-6, but could not break through as an extra period was needed to decide a winner in this crucial league match.
In the first overtime, the Mastodons came away with two shots, both going wide of the net, while Kansas City's Hannah Chadick tallied the lone shot for the Kangaroos that went wide as well.
During the second overtime, neither squad tallied a shot as the match ended in a tie.
At game's end, the Kangaroos out-shot Fort Wayne, 13-8, while keeper Nina Tzianos came up with one save.
Next up, the Blue & Gold will head north to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.
