WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University freshman Jill Root (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) registered a goal and a pair of assists to pace the Hawks to a 4-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference women's soccer action on Friday night, on The Great Lawn. As the Monmouth program celebrated "Christie Rampone Night", the Hawks improved to 4-0 in the league behind their seventh win in the last eight outings, moving their overall mark to 7-4.
"It was a terrific performance on The Great Lawn tonight," stated head coach Krissy Turner, who won her 80th career NEC match as the leader of the Hawks. "We had a balanced attack and defensively, in conference play, we have been solid."
Monmouth, which has outscored its opponents 23-6 in its last eight matches, posted its fourth shutout of the season, and third in league play.
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks exploded for four scores in the second half, as sophomore Tina Antzoulatos (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) opened the scoring in the 49th minute, her second marker of the year, off a feed from Root. In the 54th minute, the Hawks doubled their lead on sophomore Alexandra Baca's (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) successful penalty kick after a hand ball in the box.
Root, following a short corner kick play, dribbled to the end line and snuck a shot by Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller in the 80th minute for her first career tally and a 3-0 Monmouth advantage.
Sophomore Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional – Old Tappan), who netted both scores in Monmouth's win over Wagner on Tuesday night, capped the Hawks' scoring, finding the back of the net off a feed from Root for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.
"Having Christie Rampone in attendance was inspirational to our players and added to the atmosphere of the game," added Turner.
Monmouth outshot the Mountaineers 15-5 in the match, including an 11-2 edge in the decisive second half, forcing Miller to make five saves. Freshman Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding), in her sixth game in net, made two stops for her third clean sheet of the year.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, October 9 when the Hawks host Columbia University (4-7) in non-conference play on The Great Lawn, at 1:00 p.m.
