Royals Battle Drew To Scoreless Tie
The University of Scranton women’s soccer team had a handful of scoring chances on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately settled for a 0-0 draw in double overtime against Drew University in a Landmark Conference match at Fitzpatrick Field.
The tie moves Scranton to 5-6-3 overall and 2-0-1 in Landmark Conference play, good for first place with three games remaining. Drew is now 5-6-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference, putting the Rangers in fourth place with two games left.
The Royals held a 23-15 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in the overtime periods. But Drew made eight saves, including a pair by junior defender Kiana Lundy (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes), who knocked away two shots that were headed for the back of the goal.
Junior forward Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) led Scranton with five shots, including three on goal. Senior midfielder Sydney Parker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and senior defender Jessica Sciscione (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) had four shots each.
Junior goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made a season-high six saves for her seventh goal of the season.
The tie snapped the Royals’ 18-game winning streak against Landmark Conference foes, including playoff matches. They are unbeaten since suffering a 3-2 loss at Catholic on Nov. 4, 2009, in the Landmark Conference championship.
The Royals return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian College in a Landmark Conference match at 4 p.m.
