RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Bakersfield scored twice in a 59-second span in the second half as the Roadrunners defeated UC Riverside 3-1 to improve to 4-0 on the season and match the best start for the CSUB program at the Division I level. Bakersfield began the 2010 season by going 4-0.
The Highlanders (1-3) struck first. At the 5:10 mark of the first half, Juan Mendoza converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 UC Riverside advantage.
Simon Doherty (Jr., West Lothian, Scotland, FDU) put back his own rebound at 69:22 to tie the match for the Roadrunners. Jamie Carey-Morrell (Fr., Stevenage, England, The Nobel School) stole the ball from a Highlander defender on the ensuing possession and his shot on net put the ‘Runners into the lead. David Velasquez (R-Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Locke HS) scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to cap off the ‘Runner scoring.
Bakersfield will look to stay undefeated Saturday night when CSUB welcomes UC Davis (1-0-3) to the Main Soccer Field for the 2014 Bakersfield home opener.
