Rutgers Men’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision To No. 25 Iona On Late Goal
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 16, 2011) – Despite a dominating performance by the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers men’s soccer (3-2-0) was edged by No. 25 Iona (5-0-0) 1-0 on Friday evening.
The loss to the Gaels snapped a two-game win streak for the Scarlet Knights, who were coming off victories against College of Charleston and Drexel.
“It’s a very unfortunate outcome,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “I was happy with the way we played. Sometimes the ball bounces your way, but tonight it didn’t. We had a lot of loose balls that just happened to get deflected by defenders or the keeper was able to get on the end of it. But on a positive note, if we continue to play at this level, the results will come.
“Credit Iona, they’re a very good team. Defensively, I thought we bottled them up pretty well except for that one opportunity by Samuel Adjei. He’s a great player and you can’t let someone of his caliber get that type of chance.”
Rutgers outshot Iona 18-7 and controlled much of the play, but the Gaels found the goal in the 80th minute to secure the narrow victory, as Samuel Adjei got on the end of a cross from Alvaro Torrecilla.
Senior forward Ibrahim Kamara (North Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman forward Juan Pablo Correa (Montville, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights with four shots, as the pair had a number of quality opportunities in the box, forcing Iona goalkeeper Borja Barbero into three saves.
