Rutgers Opens Weekend With Win at Colgate

September 4, 2015

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Rutgers men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season after picking up a 2-1 come from behind victory at Colgate on Friday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field. Sophomore Miles Hackett (Montclair, N.J.) netted the equalizer, while redshirt senior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) sent in the game-winner 24 seconds into the second half.

"It's great to get a win on the road, especially against a very good Colgate team," said head coach Dan Donigan. "There are still some things we need to fix. We gave up too many loose balls, which resulted in Colgate's first goal. However, we did enough to get the win on what is a challenging weekend. While we are happy with the result, our guys are focused on recovering and getting ready for a very talented Syracuse team next."

The Red Raiders (0-1-1) struck early, capitalizing on a takeaway in Rutgers territory. Ethan Kutler forced the possession change and gave Colgate a 1-0 lead eight minutes in on a strike from 18-yards out. Rutgers, however, tied the score up at 1-1 in the 19th minute. Along the right side, sophomore Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) dribbled around a Red Raider defender to slide the ball into the box. Hackett used one tap to send the ball across the net into the far left corner.

The score remained tied going into halftime, but less than 30 seconds into the second stanza, Rutgers took the lead.

Off a one-on-one, Correa blasted the ball from the inside top right of the 18 into the lower left corner for the game-winner.

The Scarlet Knights outshot the Red Raiders, 7-6, with the RU defense limiting Colgate to only two looks on net. Junior David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) made his lone save of the match late in the first half on an Abdel Sanogo header.

The Rutgers men's soccer team remains on the road and travels to Syracuse for a 7 p.m. kick on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Orange enter the game at 2-1-0 following a 4-1 home opening victory against UC-Riverside on Friday.
