Saints Battle Saint Peter’s to Tie
Sophomore striker Alexander Tejera scored the game-tying goal in the 28th minute as Siena Soccer rallied to earn a 1-1 tie at Saint Peter’s in the regular season finale. Sophomore goalkeeper Gianni Carillo made five saves for the Saints which enter next week’s MAAC Tournament riding a three-match unbeaten streak.
At the time of release, Siena (6-9-3, 5-4-1) can still be seeded either fifth or sixth for the MAAC Championships which kick off next week at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Saints would be the No. 5 seed – and clinch the final coveted First Round bye – with a Marist loss against MAAC Regular Season Champion Monmouth tonight in Poughkeepsie (7 p.m.). If that scenario plays out Siena would play Iona, who in that situation would be the No. 4 seed, in a quarterfinals matchup Friday at 2 p.m. If the Red Foxes win or tie this evening, Siena would be the No. 6 seed and face 11th seeded Niagara in a First Round match Thursday at 11 a.m.
Both Siena and Saint Peter’s (7-8-2, 4-5-1) scored just five minutes apart midway through the first half to account for both goals. The Peacocks struck first when Carlos Cartegna put in a rebound in the 23rd minute. But the Saints responded when senior midfielder Nils Weddig sent in a service from the right that found the head of Tejera who finished his third goal of the season.
Siena out-shot Saint Peter’s 21-13 and held an 8-0 margin in corners. Six of Siena’s shots came during the extra sessions, but Peacocks’ goalkeeper Jamie Cleland made three of his saves over the final 20 minutes to keep the Saints off the board. Saint Peter’s best overtime chance came in the 107th minute when a Cartegna marker hit the crossbar.
Cleland finished with seven saves for the Peacocks which head into the MAAC Tournament going in the opposite direction of the Saints as they are winless in their last four matches. At the time of release. Saint Peter’s can still be seeded either seventh or eighth for the MAAC Championships.
