Saints Battle Stags to 1-1 Draw
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior captain Allison Clark scored her first collegiate goal as Siena Women’s Soccer rallied from an early deficit to earn a hard fought 1-1 tie against Fairfield Wednesday afternoon at Siena Field. Senior goalkeeper Liz Rogan made a career-high 10 saves for the Saints.
Both sides had numerous chances throughout regulation and both overtime periods in an exciting match. Overall, Fairfield (4-8-3, 1-3-2) held a 20-15 edge in shots, while Siena (6-6-3, 2-4-1) harbored a 10-4 margin in corners.
The Stags struck first just six and a half minutes into the match off a well-executed free kick just outside the top left of the box. Anna Borea made a short pass to the center to Holly Habyan who played it right back to Borea who lofted a shot just underneath the crossbar.
Fairfield, which out-shot Siena 10-4 in the opening stanza, had a chance to go up two scores just before the half, but Brenna Brown’s clean look clanked off the outside post. Rogan was active early, making five of her saves over the opening 45 minutes to keep the Saints within striking distance heading into the half.
Just four and a half minutes into the second half, Siena would find the equalizer. Junior back Tara Sobierajski attempted a free kick from 30 yards out straight on. Her service found freshman striker Lindsay Mulligan in a crowded box and her shot pin-balled off Clark and into the goal.
Each side continued to create opportunities the remainder of the way, with both teams’ best chances coming just inside the final five minutes of regulation. Siena garnered consecutive corner kicks with the latter leading to a pair of shots in tight where the first attempt was blocked and the rebound went just wide. On their ensuing trip downfield, Fairfield’s Jenny Jacobs’ marker was punched off the underside of the crossbar by Rogan and came straight down on top of the goal line but did not cross it.
Sophomore midfielder Madison Vasquez once again led the way with four targets for the Saints which earned their first point against the perennial MAAC power Stags since 2010. Jenna Pike made one save for Fairfield which is now winless in six of its last seven matches (1-3-3).
The Saints head to Iona for another key MAAC match Saturday at noon.
