Saints Bested By Stony Brook, 2-1
Siena Men's Soccer (1-4) held a 10-9 advantage over non-conference foe Stony Brook (1-3-1) Friday evening, but it did not stop the Seawolves from taking home the win. The home team scored a pair of goals in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory at LaValle Stadium, handing the Saints their third straight setback.
Competing against each other for the second time in each program's history, the squads played to a draw in the first half, with the period featuring 12 combined fouls and ten shots between the two teams. Siena came the closest to scoring in the 29th minute, when senior Conor McGlynn banked a shot just to the right following a corner kick opportunity.
Despite the Saints controlling the match's offensive opportunities consistently, The Seawolves were able to convert to get on the board just 16 seconds into the second half. Stony Brook's Birkir Gudmundsson took the opening kickoff and finished with a score to the top left of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The lead would not hold for long, with the Saints converting a penalty kick opportunity in the 60th minute to tie things up at one. McGlynn took the kick following foul inside the box committed by Stony Brook's Jarred Dass and put it into the top right corner of the net.
Despite more opportunities offensively for the Saints, Stony Brook came back to take hold of a lead they would never relinquish in the 69th minute, with Dass receiving a pass from Mark Irvine and putting it in the lower right part of the net.
Overall, six different Saints attempted a shot in the loss, with sophomore Aaron Martin leading the way with three in 59 minutes of reserve action. Sophomore captain Greg Monroe made his 32rd consecutive start in-between-the-pipes for the Green and Gold, making three saves in the process.
Siena returns home to the Capital Region on Monday, September 15 to try to break off a three-game losing skid. Kickoff against Vermont at Hickey Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
