Saints Blank Canisius Improve to 3-1 in MAAC
Junior midfielder David Itoafa’s sixth minute strike stood up as Siena Soccer spun a 1-0 shutout at Canisius. Sophomore striker Alexander Tejera assisted on the decisive goal for the Saints which have won four of five.
Siena (4-6-2, 3-1) peppered the Canisius (3-7-1, 0-4) goal with quality targets throughout the first half and cashed in early. On a loose ball in the box, Tejera deflected the ball to Itoafa who finished his third marker of the year.
Despite being out-shot 17-12 overall, Itoafa’s strike was the difference as the Saints recorded their first win on the Canisius campus since Oct. 26, 1997 in a series which the home team had held serve over the previous eight meetings.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gianni Carillo made all three of his saves in the second half to record his third clean sheet in his first five collegiate matches, while lowering his goals against average to a minute 0.55.
Andrew Coughlin made all five of his saves in the first half for the Golden Griffins which have suffered one-goal losses in each of their last three conference matches.
The Saints return to the Capital Region Saturday to host Rider for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
