Saints Bounce Back, Shut Down Canisius
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Women’s Soccer controlled play from start to finish and scored twice over the final third of the second half in a thorough 2-0 shutout of Canisius at Siena Field. Junior back Tara Sobierajski and sophomore midfielder Madison Vasquez scored for the Saints which were impressive in snapping a three-match losing streak.
Siena (6-5-2, 2-3) held an 18-5 edge in shots including an 11-2 tally in the first half, but was unable to put one past Canisius (3-9-2, 1-4) goalkeeper Kailee DeFranks who made seven of her eight saves over the opening 45 minutes.
However, the Saints persistent pressuring approach would pay off in the 69th minute. Sophomore midfielder Michele Tremblay quick played a free kick just outside the top left of the box to Sobierajski who ran into a blast that she buried inside the top right corner for her first marker of the year.
Siena would put the match out of reach nine minutes later. Freshman striker Gabby Albano crossed a pass in from the left to Vasquez who had her initial shot blocked, but corralled the rebound which she finished for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Rogan needed to make just two saves to post her fourth clean sheet for the Saints which ran their unbeaten streak against the Golden Griffins to six (5-0-1).
The Saints return to action Saturday when they battle defending MAAC Tournament Champion Rider in a rematch of last year’s MAAC Quarterfinal in New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Lawrenceville.
