Saints Bounce Back, Shutout Iona
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior captain Matt Hemsley tallied a goal and an assist as Siena Soccer bounced back with a key 2-0 MAAC shutout of Iona. Red-shirt junior goalkeeper Adam Myers made a career-high seven saves to post his third clean sheet of the season.
In a physical affair which featured seven yellow cards and 29 fouls between the two teams, the over-aggressiveness would ultimately cost Iona (5-6-2, 2-2-1).
In the 74th minute the Gaels were whistled for a foul in the box. Hemsley would take and convert the penalty kick to give the Saints (6-6, 2-2) the late lead.
Minutes later Siena put it away as Hemsley played a ball up to Nathan Olukanmi who crossed in front to David Itoafa who volleyed it in for his second goal of the season.
With the win, Siena is now unbeaten in its past eight MAAC home matches (7-0-1) and has outscored its conference foes 14-3 over that time.
The Saints head to Fairfield – site of this year’s MAAC Championship – Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
