Saints Drop Conference Home Opener
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Iona scored two second half goals to spoil Siena Soccer’s MAAC home opener 2-0 at Siena Turf Field. Senior goalkeeper Aleksa Radosavljevic – who entered play ranked fourth nationally in saves – added six more to his tally.
Humbert Ferrer scored the game-winner in the 56th minute and Lenworth Lopez added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute for Iona (2-3-2, 1-1) which reclaims the lead in the tightly contested all-time series at 19-18-2.
Senior captain Danilo Markovic appeared to give Siena (2-4-4, 0-1-1) the lead in the final 25 seconds of the first half, but his header goal was waived off as the offsides flag went up. Freshmen midfielders Alejandro Riquelme and Andreas Rosnes led the way with two shots apiece for the Saints which dropped their first conference home opener in six seasons.
Iona held a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 6-2 margin in corners.
Siena returns to action next Saturday when the Saints travel to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
