Saints Edged By Stags, 1-0
Loudonville, NY – Continuing its 2018 conference slate, Siena Men’s soccer fell to MAAC rival Fairfield at the Siena Turf Field, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon. Both teams battled through dreary conditions, which included temperatures in the low 50’s and periodical rain during the first half.
Siena (3-8-1, 2-4) was once again tasked with defending against one of the league’s top-ranked offenses, with 10 shots coming from the Stags in the first half of play. The Saints saw four players spend the entirety of the match on the field, including goalkeeper Greg Monroe and defender Andreas Rosnes.
Fairfield (9-4, 6-0) saw its winning streak increase to six games with the decision, continuing to stand as the only team undefeated in league play. After an offensive surge in the first half by the Stags which featured four corner kicks, the decider came in the 27th minute of action, with Joseph Meyer finishing off a far-left corner kick from Matt McGlinchey in the top-right area of the net.
Overall, the Stags controlled the affair offensively through the duration of the match, leading in shots, 13-6 and holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, which included the game-winning assist.
One of three Saints to register a shot on the afternoon, junior captain Conor MyGlynn steadied the team offensively making four attempts, including a pair on-goal. Monroe tallied a pair of saves in his tenth consecutive contest in which he spent each minute in between the pipes.
Looking for position themselves in-line for a berth in the 2018 MAAC postseason tournament, Siena now heads on the road to continue conference play. The Saints travel to New Rochelle, NY on Saturday, Oct. 20 for a match with Iona at Noon.
