Saints Oust Marist, Move on to MAAC Semis
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Siena Women’s Soccer is headed back to the MAAC Semifinals for the third consecutive season. Senior captain Madison Vasquez’s 52nd minute goal proved to be the difference as the fourth seeded Saints eliminated rival and No. 5 seed Marist 1-0 in the MAAC Quarterfinals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Winners of seven of their last eight, Siena (11-7) moves on to play the only team that has defeated them during their hot streak in No. 1 overall seed Monmouth. The MAAC Regular Season Champions received an 84th minute goal from Madie Gibson to survive eighth seeded Niagara by an identical 1-0 score in their quarterfinal matchup. The Hawks defeated the Saints 3-1 in the regular season meeting between the teams Oct. 14 in Loudonville.
Vasquez scored her fifth goal of the season – and second in as many matches – just over seven minutes into the second half. Fellow senior captain Michele Tremblay took a shot from the top left of the box which was blocked out right to Casey Scott. The senior midfielder promptly fed a cutting Vasquez who one-timed home the decisive goal from just inside the top of the 18.
Siena held a 13-10 advantage in shots as the Saints ran their unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1) over Marist (8-8-3), including five consecutive victories. The Red Foxes held a 4-2 margin in corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Dorado made one save for Siena whose eight MAAC Tournament victories since 2010 are the most of any school. The shutout was Dorado’s seventh of the season, and just one shy of the program’s single-season benchmark.
Makala Foley made three saves for Marist who had their four-match unbeaten streak snapped to end their season.
Siena and Monmouth will now square off in the MAAC Semifinals for the second time in three years when the teams meet Tuesday at 11 a.m. on ESPN3. The sixth seeded Saints upset the top ranked Hawks on their home field en route to completing the team’s Cinderella-like run to the 2015 MAAC Title. Siena will need to have more magic in-store for the rematch against the defending MAAC Champions and heavy favorites to repeat. The venue certainly fits the bill.
