Saints Rally Late to Forge Tie at Vermont
Junior midfielder Madison Vasquez converted the match-tying penalty kick with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation as Siena Women’s Soccer rallied late to earn a 1-1 tie at Vermont. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Dorado made two saves for Siena which ran its unbeaten streak against the Catamounts to an even 10 (8-0-2).
Siena (1-3-3) out-shot Vermont (2-2-1) 12-8, but found themselves trailing entering the waning moments of regulation. The Catamounts’ Savana Yurick had tallied what up until the final minute had been the decisive score, finishing a third attempt in front off a rebound in the 39th minute.
However down to likely their final chance to draw even, the Saints came through. Freshman striker Amber Alfonzo played a pass out to the left of the box to charging senior captain Tara Sobierajski who was taken down to set up the penalty.
Vasquez then stepped up and fired a shot towards the lower right corner, off the fingertips of Catamounts’ keeper Coco Speckmaier and inside the near post as the Saints’ rallied to secure their third tie in their first seven matches of 2016.
Speckmaier stopped six shots for Vermont which was playing its fourth match during a season opening five-match homestand.
The Saints return to action Sunday for their final tune-up before they begin their MAAC Championship defense, when they host LIU Brooklyn in the non-conference finale at 1 p.m. at Siena Field.
