Saints Rally Late to Tie CCSU
Freshman Emily McNelis scored her first collegiate goal in the 78th minute to rally Siena Women’s Soccer to a 1-1 tie at Central Connecticut. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Dorado made six saves for the Saints.
Central Connecticut (1-1-1) held a 14-7 advantage in shots, albeit just a 7-6 margin in shots on goal. Siena (2-1-1) held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Danielle Pearse broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute when she corralled a turnover in deep and blasted home the go-ahead tally for CCSU from 25 yards out.
But with the Saints pressing hard for the equalizer late, McNelis drew Siena even. Junior Haleigh Schanz’s corner kick from the right made it all the way through to the far post where McNelis corralled the ball in traffic, took one touch, and volleyed home the tying tally inside the near left post.
The Saints controlled tempo during both overtime periods, but the Blue Devils’ Ashley Cavanaugh made two of her five saves during the extra sessions to preserve the tie.
Following a busy three-match week, Siena will now have eight days to prepare for its next contest when the Saints host Cornell on Labor Day at 3 p.m.
