Saints’ Second Half Rally Falls Short
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Women’s Soccer registered 10 shots and eight corners during a spirited second half rally attempt, but ultimately couldn’t overcome Paige DeLoach’s fifth minute marker as Cornell hung on to shut out the Saints 1-0 at Siena Field. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Dorado made two saves for Siena which saw its seven-match regular season unbeaten streak snapped.
Cornell (1-0) scored on the first chance of the match just four and a half minutes in. Juliana Comer’s long shot attempt was stopped in front by DeLoach who turned, fired and scored inside the left post. The Big Red held a 4-3 margin in shots, and a 3-1 advantage in corners over the first 45 minutes of action.
But the second half story would be vastly different as Siena (1-1-2) looked more like the fresher squad playing its first match of the season than the team that was playing for the fourth time in nine days.
The Saints set a frenetic pace right from the opening second half kickoff. Siena garnered six shots and five corners within the first 14 minutes of the stanza as they battled hard in their attempt to chase the tying goal.
The Saints’ best look may have come within the opening minute of the half, but sophomore midfielder Gabby Albano’s blast was punched over the crossbar by lunging Cornell keeper Kelsey Tierney. Tierney made four saves to earn the shutout for the Big Red which served Siena just the program’s fifth non-conference home defeat in 37 matches over the past 10 seasons.
The Saints conclude their season long three-match homestand Thursday with a 4 p.m. kickoff at Siena Field against reigning America East Regular Season Champion Hartford.
