Saints Shut Out Binghamton
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore striker Kelsey Horst scored just 96 seconds into the match and that would be all the Saints would need as women’s soccer recorded its third straight shutout, defeating Binghamton 1-0 at Siena Field. Senior goalkeeper Liz Rogan needed to make just two saves to post her third consecutive clean sheet and run her shutout streak to 292:31.
Siena (2-1-2) held a slim 13-11 edge in shots, but limited Binghamton (1-3-1) to just two shots on goal in another impressive defensive effort. The Saints also held a 4-1 edge in corners in running their unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1), while also improving to a remarkable 28-3-2 (.879) in non-conference home matches dating back to the start of the 2007 season.
Horst was active early, registering three shots on goal in the first four minutes and was able to cash in on her first opportunity. Junior midfielder Kristen Connors sent a long ball down the left side that Horst won the one-on-one foot race to. Her initial shot was saved, but she was able to put home the rebound to tally her second collegiate goal and second in as many matches.
The defense did the rest as Siena, which had allowed seven goals in its first two matches, extended its shutout streak to just over 60 minutes within the program record of 355:31 set during the MAAC Championship season of 2010.
Katie Hatziyianis made six saves for Binghamton which opened its seven-match road trip with its third consecutive defeat.
The Saints conclude their season long three-game homestand – and play their third straight America East opponent – when they host Vermont Wednesday at 4 p.m.
