Saints Stay Hot, Beat Brown
What a week it’s been for the Siena Soccer team. On Wednesday the Saints knocked off 23rd ranked Boston University and Friday night Siena achieved its first 3-0 start in the program’s 41 seasons with a 2-1 win at Brown.
Freshman Alexander Tejera and senior captain Nick Theobald scored just two minutes apart early in the second half for the Saints (3-0). Freshman Josh Weiss was tested throughout in goal and made a season-high seven saves to earn his third victory.
All of the scoring came early in the second half after the teams played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes.
Tejera buried his second goal in as many matches into the top right corner, following a feed from junior Nils Weddig in the 49th minute. Just 2:04 later the Saints were awarded a penalty kick which Theobald converted.
Brown (0-1) turned up the pressure thereafter and finally broke through when Ben Maurey finished a long service from James Myall in the 66th minute. It was just the first goal allowed by the stingy Siena defense in more than 245 minutes to begin the season.
The Bears out-shot the Saints 20-8 including 15-5 in the second half and attempted nine corners, but Weiss made six of his seven stops in the final stanza to preserve the win. Mitch Kupstas made three saves for Brown.
The Saints return home Tuesday to host Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. before embarking on a program record six-match road trip beginning next weekend in Oregon.
