Saints Thwart Monmouth To Start 2-0 In MAAC
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Soccer is off to a 2-0 start in the MAAC for the third time in four years, following a 1-0 victory over Monmouth Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Aaron Martin scored for the Saints, which gave head coach Cesar Markovic his 40th victory leading the Green and Gold.
Siena (3-4-3, 2-0) controlled play throughout, holding a 15-6 advantage in shots and a 13-8 margin in corner kicks in posting its third win in its past four matches following an 0-3-3 start.
Siena exhibited a solid pace as the match began, holding an 8-3 lead in shots heading into halftime, with seven corners being fired off in the first 45 minutes as well.
The Saints finally broke through in the 71st minute, when junior Cristobal Toledo intercepted a pass inside the box and fed Martin, who finished for his team-leading third goal of the season.
Redshirt freshman Linus Johansson led a contingent of five different Saints who registered shots in the affair, posting a season-high four attempts. Monmouth (2-6-1, 0-2) goalie Sean Murray made all five of his saves in the second half of play.
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Monroe collected his first career shutout, notching one save while spending all 90 minutes in-goal. The Clifton Park, NY native was aided by another Solid Siena defensive effort, which has allowed just 11 total shots in the last two matches after giving up an average of 21.6 in the first eight.
Looking to put together their first 3-0 start to conference action since 2012, the Saints take to the road for a mid-week contest at Manhattan College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
