Sandmann kicks FMU past Hurricanes 2-0
AMERICUS, GA – Sophomore forward Levin Sandmann scored a goal in each half and sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes made four saves to lead Francis Marion University to a 2-0 shutout road win over Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday (Oct. 22) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.
The victory evens FMU’s season mark at 7-7-1 and pushes the Patriots into third place in the conference standings with 15 points and a 5-3 mark. Francis Marion will conclude its regular-season schedule at Flagler College on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The top four teams in the PBC will host quarterfinals matches in the conference tournament on Nov. 1
Sandmann broke a scoreless draw with a 38th minute goal thanks to an assist from freshman Austin Lee. His second score, an insurance tally at the 81:14 mark, came from an assist by sophomore Oliver Drakenhammar.
Sandmann leads the Peach in total points with 29 and shares the league lead with 11 goals.
Despite being blanked, Georgia Southwestern led the Patriots in shots 18-17, but Francis Marion held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. The Hurricanes took 12 shots in the second half, but only two (in the 74th and 83rd minutes) required saves by Mannes, who picked up his third clean sheet of 2016 and the ninth of his young career.
Sandmann registered five shots, while both junior Harrison Smith and Drakenhammar took three each. Goalkeeper Joshua Swift recorded five stops for GSW.
