Schafer Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Weel
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Sept. 1, 2014 - Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.) was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman Player of the Week for Sept. 1 after scoring her first two collegiate goals against UConn on Fri, Aug. 29, the conference office announced Monday.
Schafer, a freshman, came in as a reserve and netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 Penn State win over UConn. She became the first Nittany Lion freshman to score a pair of goals in a match since 2010.
The Langhorne, Pa., native scored the 2-0 game-winner in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a UConn clearing attempt to put it past the Huskies goalkeeper.
She scored again at 43:49, rising above a goal mouth scramble following a Penn State corner kick for the 3-0 lead. Schafer played a season-high 62 minutes and took a team-best four shots, three of which were on net.
This is first Big Ten weekly honor of the season for a Nittany Lion.
Penn State (3-0-0) travels to the Duke Nike Classic in Durham, N.C., this weekend. The team opens the tournament with a 5 p.m. game against North Carolina on Fri., Sept. 5. The Nittany Lions then face Duke on Sun., Sept. 7 at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be broadcasted live on ESPN 3, available online at WatchESPN.com.
