DOVER, Del. – Nine different players scored goals as the Delaware State University women’s soccer team recorded their first win of the season in a 12-0 rout of Lincoln University (Pa.) Friday evening in front of a crowd of 404 at Alumni Stadium.

 

The 12 goals tallied by the Hornets surpasses a previous school record of eight goals scored that was set in an 8-1 victory over Concordia (N.Y.) on Sept. 16, 2007.  Additionally, DSU scored seven goals in the second half against the Lions, breaking the record of six set against Concordia.

 

With a combination of goals and assists, DSU collected 33 points, nearly doubling the previous total of 18 points that was also set against Concordia.

 

Senior Michelle Giorgilli (Millville, Del.), junior Theresa Wappett (Queensbury, N.Y.) and sophomore Kelly Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.) each scored two goals on the night.

 

“It was nice for everyone to start to get the goal at the back of the net,” commented Wappett.  “We were able to calm some nerves, and get some shots off without getting scared to shoot the ball.  We know we have to work extremely hard in practice tomorrow in order to carry this win and momentum over to Sunday’s game.”

 

The Hornets also saw goals from juniors Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.), Elizabeth Olivier (Andover, N.J.) and Randall Marshall (Laurel, Md.), sophomores Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) and Darcy Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Chelsea Boursiquot (Stratford, Conn.).  Marshall and Boursiquot each scored goals earlier in the season.

 

DSU opened the floodgates early, scoring their first goal of their night in the second minute from Wappett.  Wyre got in on the action just four minutes later to give the Hornets a quick 2-0 lead.

 

The Lions put more pressure on the Hornets and held them scoreless for the next 24 minutes when Marshall put in a header off of a corner kick from Wappett to go up, 3-0, in the 30^th minute.  DSU saw two more goals to go into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

 

In the 48^th minute, the Hornets found themselves with a 6-0 advantage.  Goals from twins Kelly and Darcy Pelz-Butler in the 56^th and 58^th minutes put DSU up, 8-0.  Kelly Pelz-Butler responded with another goal in the 63^rd minute.

 

Wyre and junior Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.) executed perfect passes to find Olivier, who put the ball in the net from about four yards out and take a 10-0 lead in the 71^st minute.

 

Boursiquot and Schech rounded out the evening for the Hornets, with goals in the 80^th and 84^th minutes, respectively.

 

In addition to breaking goal records, DSU also recorded 32 shots, four more than the previous record of 28 set against Howard in 2006 and 20 shots on goal, two more than the previous record of 18, also set against Howard in 2006.

 

The shutout is the second of the season for DSU, who tied St. Peter’s earlier in the year.  Freshman Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) collected six saves on the night while LU’s Sima Sinforosa posted eight saves.

 

The win puts the Hornets at 1-5-1 on the season while the loss is the Lions’ second of the season at 0-2-0.

 

DSU wraps up their four-game home stand on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Canisius College.
