School Records Fall as Winthrop Wins 3-1
CONWAY, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team set four school records on Thursday evening as it picked up a 3-1 Big South Conference victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at CCU Soccer Field.
The Eagles improve to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while the Chanticleers fall to 2-14-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the Big South. The seven conference wins are a school record this season for Winthrop. The Eagles previous high of six wins was accomplished twice in 2006 and 2010.
Winthrop opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute on Krystyna Freda's team-high 12th goal of the season on a through ball by Courtney Durbin. Durbin's pass from the middle of the field made its way past two Coastal Carolina defenders far side to Freda, who beat a Chanticleer one-on-one and scored near side past Megan Spencer.
Ashley Herndon put the Eagles ahead 2-0 just three minutes later in the 36th minute off a free kick far side from 35 yards out. Herndon put her ball toward the middle of the box, and the ball curved back to the net over the head of Spencer near side into the net. It was Herndon's first career goal at Winthrop.
Freda added to the Eagles advantage in the 81st minute on her second goal of the contest and 13th overall. Allie VandeWater's flick pass to Freda in the middle of the box set up the goal as Freda beat a Coastal Carolina defender far side. Her shot deflected off Chanticleer goalie Saundra Baron, but the ball got away from her and slipped inside the left post. The assist by VandeWater was her third of the year.
The two goals by Freda set a new Eagle scoring record for most goals and points in a season. The previous season-high of 11 goals and 26 points were set by Whitney Sanders in 2003 during Winthrop's first season as a program. The assist by Durbin, her sixth of the season, also tied a school season-high for assists in a season with six previously set by Chelsea White in 2007 and Erin Foote in 2006.
The Eagles also set a new school record for most goals in a season with 40 as they broke the old record of 39, which occurred in 2003 and 2006.
Rylie Johnson looked to give Coastal Carolina their first goal of the game in the 89th minute on a penalty kick after Winthrop committed a foul inside the penalty box. Her shot would be blocked by Eagle goalie Kelsy Weavil, who came into the contest earlier for starter Sarah Schippers.
The Chanticleers would make it a 3-1 game in the 90th minute on a header from Shelby Evans on a corner kick by Alyssa Clark. It was Evans' first goal of the season.
Coastal Carolina finished the match with a 15-14 advantage in shots and 6-5 in shots on-goal. The Chanticleers also held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freda led Winthrop offensively with five shots to go with her two goals, while Schippers had four saves and Weavil with one.
Morgan Thomas attempted a team-high five shots for Coastal Carolina, and Baron snagged two saves.
The Eagles will wrap up its regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a 2 p.m. matchup at Charleston Southern.
