Schulz' Pair Gives Stags 4-0 Win At Iona

The Fairfield University women’s soccer team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) host Iona College 4-0, Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y. and clinched a spot in the 2012 MAAC Championship. The win improves the Stags to 9-4-2 overall and 6-1-0 in league play, while the Gaels fall to 5-8-3 on the year and 3-3-1 in conference action.
Shannon Fay wanted little time getting the Stags on the board, knocking a misplayed back pass into an empty net 74 seconds into the game. Kasey Schulz pushed the advantage to 2-0 with her first tally of the year. She collected a rebound from a Lauren Reilly shot off the post and put the ball into the back of the net at the 11:44 mark. Stephanie Sutherby scored her first collegiate in the 39th minute with a chip shot from 22-yards out to give Fairfield a 3-0 lead that it would take into the intermission.
Kathleen Early earned the win in net, finishing the game with a pair of saves. The clean sheet is her fifth of the season. Trista Rivera had a save and four goals allowed in net for the Gaels.
Schulz netted her second goal of the game in the 89th minute, putting home a cross from Emily Wieczorek for the 4-0 lead. Fairfield scored half of its eight shots on the day, outshooting Iona 8-3 for the game. Both teams had three corner kick chances and neither was called offsides on the afternoon. The Stags committed more fouls, 14-9, than Iona.
The Stags play their final road game, and non-conference game, of the year on Monday night when they travel to Yale for a 7 p.m. game.
