The University of Scranton women’s soccer team had a few solid scoring chances, but ultimately settled for a 0-0 draw in double overtime against Juniata on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

The Royals (5-4-2, 1-0-1 Landmark) held a commanding 18-4 advantage in shots, including 7-1 in shots on goal. Their best chance came in the ninth minute when junior defender Erin Casey (Hatfield, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) got to the ball off a corner kick and appeared to have an open goal to shoot at, but a Juniata defender near the right post was able to clear the ball away before Casey’s shot could cross the goal line.

Less than two minutes later, Juniata freshman goalkeeper Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep) made a strong save on a header by Casey, one of six saves Leonard would make.

Sophomore forward Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led Scranton with eight shots while Casey and freshman forward Samantha Wargo (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) had three each.

The Royals had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks in the match, as well.

The draw extended Scranton’s unbeaten streak against Landmark Conference foes to 34 matches, a streak that extends back to the conference championship match in 2009. The Royals are 28-0-6 against conference opponents during that span.

Scranton is back in action on Wednesay, Oct. 8, when it travels to Danbury, Conn. to take on Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
