Scranton Suffers 1-0 Defeat At Wilkes
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women’s soccer team could not convert on a pair of excellent scoring chances and ultimately suffered a 1-0 defeat against Wilkes on Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Field.
The Royals (5-4-1) held a 12-7 advantage in shots, including 8-0 in the first half over the Colonels (7-4), but could not break through. Scranton’s two best scoring chances came in the second half, with a header by junior defender Erin Casey (Hatfield, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) hitting the crossbar in the 50th minute, and a shot by freshman defender Meredith D’Angelo (Hatboro, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) hitting the post in the 72nd minute.
Wilkes scored the game’s only goal in the 62nd minute when junior forward Grace Fazzi (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) took a perfect feed to the far post from freshman forward Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) and scored her second goal of the season.
Sophomore forward Kelly Egan (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) had a team-high six shots for Scranton, which held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Royals are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host Juniata in a Landmark Conference match at 3:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. The Royals will collect donations as part of their Passionately Pink event to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s battle against breast cancer.
